Shaqueel van Persie, the son of Dutch football legend Robin van Persie, has reportedly decided to represent Morocco at international level instead of the Netherlands.
According to reports from Moroccan outlet ZoneFRMF, the 19-year-old forward has chosen the Atlas Lions, taking advantage of his dual nationality through his Moroccan mother, Bouchra. The decision, if confirmed by the player or the respective football federations, would mark a significant recruitment success for Morocco as they continue to strengthen their national team with talented dual-national players.
Shaqueel, who currently plays for Feyenoord, previously represented the Netherlands at youth level, featuring for the Dutch Under-16 and Under-17 sides.
His reported choice comes after Robin van Persie had publicly stated that he would allow his son to make his own international decision without any pressure, despite his own legendary status with the Dutch national team.
Morocco have enjoyed considerable success in convincing dual-national players to wear the Atlas Lions shirt in recent years, with the reported capture of Shaqueel van Persie potentially adding another exciting young talent to their long-term plans. However, an official announcement from the player or the relevant football authorities is still awaited.
