Egypt came within minutes of a statement win, taking the lead against Belgium before an own goal snatched the victory away in their 2026 World Cup group match.

Unfortunately, a late own goal from defense man Hany Mohamed turned a possible win into a 1-1 draw, letting Belgium off the hook. The Red Devils pressed late, but it was luck, not a clear chance, that earned them the point.
It’s heartbreak for Egypt, who showed they can go toe-toe with an Elite and had the win in their grasp. Belgium will count themselves lucky, while Egypt can take pride in the performance put up, adding flesh to the Continents already remarkable Matchday one performance.
The draw keeps Egypt in the hunt for knockout stage qualification when they go against New Zealand on Monday, June 22. While Belgium will face Iran same day.
