Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2–0 victory over South Africa in a match defined by an early breakthrough, growing control, and a dramatic second half that featured three red cards and mounting tension throughout.
Julián Quiñones gave El Tri the perfect start in the 9th minute, finishing clinically after being set up by Érik Lira. The early goal allowed Mexico to settle into the game and dictate large portions of the opening half, while South Africa worked hard to stay organised and compact despite falling behind early.
Bafana Bafana struggled to create clear chances in response, with Mexico managing the tempo effectively and limiting space in dangerous areas. The first half ended with Mexico in control and holding onto their narrow but deserved lead.
The game took a decisive turn early in the second half when South Africa were reduced to 10 men in the 49th minute after Sithole was shown a straight red card. The dismissal left the African side chasing the game, and Mexico soon capitalised on their advantage.
In the 67th minute, Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s lead with a composed finish to put El Tri firmly in command of the contest. From that point, Mexico appeared in control of proceedings, managing possession and limiting South Africa’s chances of a comeback.
However, the match grew increasingly chaotic in the closing stages. Themba Zwane was sent off in the 83rd minute for violent conduct, reducing South Africa to nine men and further deepening their difficulties. Mexico were also later reduced to 10 men when César Montes received a straight red card for a reckless challenge, adding another twist to an already heated encounter.
Despite the disciplinary chaos, Mexico held firm to close out a 2–0 win and secure a strong start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa were left to reflect on a night that spiralled after a promising first-half effort.
Final score: Mexico 2–0 South Africa.
