Senegalese winger Ismaïla Sarr is heading to the FIFA World Cup in red-hot form after capping off a sensational campaign by helping Crystal Palace win the UEFA Conference League on Wednesday night.
Crystal Palace defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Leipzig to lift the first European trophy in the club’s history, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal in the second half. The victory also sealed a Europa League place for Palace next season and marked a perfect farewell for manager Oliver Glasner.
While Sarr did not get on the scoresheet in the final, the Senegal international was one of the driving forces behind Palace’s remarkable European run. The 28-year-old finished the Conference League campaign as the competition’s top scorer with nine goals in 13 matches, establishing himself as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
His European campaign included a historic moment in the semi-finals when he scored after just 21 seconds against Shakhtar Donetsk — the fastest goal ever recorded in UEFA Conference League history.
Sarr’s influence stretched far beyond Europe. Across all competitions this season, the former Watford F.C. and Olympique de Marseille winger registered 22 goals and three assists, producing the most prolific campaign of his career.
The season has already delivered major silverware for the Senegalese star. Alongside the Conference League triumph, Sarr also won the Community Shield with Crystal Palace earlier in the campaign and finished as runner-up with Senegal national football team at the Africa Cup of Nations.
His resurgence under Glasner has been one of the stories of Palace’s golden era. After the departures of stars such as Wilfried Zaha, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze stepping into bigger roles, Sarr emerged as Palace’s attacking leader during their historic European adventure.
Now, with the World Cup on the horizon, Senegal will be counting on Sarr’s blistering pace, confidence and finishing ability as they look to make a deep run on football’s biggest stage. After a season filled with trophies, records and goals, the winger arrives at the tournament as one of Africa’s most in-form players.
