South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the final of the CAF Champions League after a disciplined 1-0 win over Espérance de Tunis on Saturday, sealing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Holding a narrow first-leg advantage from Tunis, Sundowns approached the second leg with control and patience at Loftus Versfeld. In a tie long expected to be decided by fine margins, the breakthrough arrived in the 35th minute when Brayan León converted from close range after reacting quickest to his own saved penalty. The Colombian had been brought down moments earlier to win the spot-kick, underlining his growing importance since arriving in January.

The goal effectively settled a tense contest between two sides with a history of low-scoring encounters, with recent meetings frequently ending 1-0 or goalless.  Sundowns’ structured approach once again proved decisive, as they limited Esperance to few clear opportunities across both legs.

Esperance attempted to respond, making several attacking changes after the break, but struggled to break through a well-organised Sundowns defence marshalled with composure. The visitors, who had already found it difficult to convert chances in the competition, were unable to mount a sustained comeback.

The decisive contribution from León continued an impressive run for the Colombian forward, who has made an immediate impact in continental competition since his arrival, adding to his tally in the tournament. His presence has added a cutting edge to Sundowns’ attack at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Having also secured a 1-0 away victory in the first leg in Tunisia, Sundowns’ aggregate success highlights their tactical maturity over two legs.  The result sends them into a second consecutive final, as they seek to win the title for the first time since their 2016 triumph.
