The focus has now shifted from embarrassment to accountability following the power outage that disrupted Cameroon’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Yaoundé, with authorities officially demanding explanations from the country’s electricity regulators.

What was initially seen as a poorly managed incident during one of Cameroonian football’s most prestigious nights has now become a matter of national concern. The blackout at the Palais des Congrès not only interrupted the ceremony but also cast a shadow over the credibility of football event organization in the country.

At the time, Samuel Eto’o, head of the Cameroon Football Federation, did not hide his frustration. He openly criticized the situation and later issued an apology, acknowledging the embarrassment caused to players, officials, and distinguished guests, including Chantal Biya.

Now, the intervention of the National Gendarmerie has added a new dimension to the story. A formal requisition has been sent to the Electricity Regulatory Agency (ARSEL), demanding a detailed report explaining why the power failure occurred during such a high-profile football event, as well as a similar outage reported at the Mont Fébé Hotel weeks later.

With a strict 72-hour deadline issued, the pressure is now firmly on ARSEL to clarify the circumstances behind the outages. For Cameroonian football, this moment reinforces the concerns raised by Eto’o on the night—turning his criticism from a reaction into a warning that is now being formally examined at the highest level.
