Cameroon’s hopes of advancing to the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a serious blow, with Franck Zambo Anguissa, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Danny Namaso all ruled out through injury ahead of Thursday’s semi-final playoff against DR Congo in Rabat.
Head coach Marc Brys, who only recently took charge of the Indomitable Lions, now faces his first major test of adaptability. The Belgian tactician will have to reorganise his line-up and strategy after losing three of his most reliable options just days before the crucial tie.
Zambo Anguissa’s injury is a particular setback. The Napoli midfielder — recently named Serie A Player of the Month — has been the engine of Cameroon’s midfield, blending physical power with technical precision. His absence leaves a void in ball recovery and transition, areas Brys will likely entrust to Jean Onana or Martin Hongla alongside Carlos Baleba and Arthur Avom Ebong.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, sidelined by a knock sustained in training, brings both leadership and attacking versatility. His absence, alongside that of young forward Danny Namaso, reduces Cameroon’s attacking depth and forces Brys to rely more heavily on captain Vincent Aboubakar, whose experience and efficiency in front of goal could prove decisive.
Goalkeeper André Onana remains under observation after feeling discomfort during recovery work. His condition will be reassessed before the final training session later this evening.
Facing a DR Congo side with physical presence and attacking pace, Brys must now count on collective discipline and tactical intelligence to guide Cameroon through. The match will be as much about mentality as quality — a defining moment in the Belgian’s tenure.
