Sophie Ikome Nanyongo impresses on debut as Wrestling Referee

28-year-old one time wrestling sensation, Sophie Nanyongo Ikome made an impressive debut as a Wrestling Referee over the weekend in Yaoundé.

Ikome, a trained sports tutor wow experts in her bow via the Ongola wrestling challenge organised by the Center Regional League of wrestling.

Ikome who recently retired from active wrestling after a glittering career took charge of six fights during Sunday’s event at Yamthe and won plaudits for her exploits in what followed up the impressive display at the last University games in Garoua earlier this year.

During her matches in various categories last Sunday, she leveraged her firsthand understanding of the sport to excel as referee through some excellent calls inspired by her concentration and experience in the game.

Many who watched, including former Wrestling star Wouna Eric Etong confessed her experience as wrestler provides a strong foundation, plus commended her for the shift from competing on the field to enforcing rules which requires significant adaptation.

Though it was her first game as a federal Referee, Ikome seemed to have learned the nuances of officiating, developing a neutral perspective, and building the skills necessary to manage games effectively despite the fans pressure.

Ikome has been off the carpet for just over a year through this transition, and has been actively involved in the Sports as part of the management of the wrestling team of the national institute of youths and sports (INJS).

The former footballer, handballer and wrestler who represented the University of Buea and INJS in various tertiary schools games in football and wrestling has developed a success reputation in whatever aspect of sports she ventures into. It remains to be seen how her career as a referee in her beloved sports will fare.
