The Super Falcons of Nigeria were held to a barren draw by the Indomitable lionesses of Cameroon at the reunification stadium for the first leg of the third round of the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers.
Trainer Randy Waldrum expressed his belief that a more intense performance in the first half could have made the difference for his side.
He stated, “Obviously, it probably was a good match for the fans to see, with two very good sides out there. At times in the first half, we were a little sluggish. However, early in the second half, the intensity and speed of our players improved. Although Cameroon had some early chances, we missed a couple of good opportunities as the game progressed.”
The lackluster display in the first half can be attributed to several factors, including late arrivals and exhaustion of some players due to club commitments.
Remarkably, the nine-time African champions had only three training sessions before this crucial match. Coach Randy supported this claim when questioned about substituting key players like Alozie and Oshoala in the second half.
“Many of our players have traveled long distances to be here. We must consider the physical toll of travel – from Nigeria to Cameroon – as we prepare for these important games,” emphasized Coach Randy.

“I guess what I will say is I was pleased with the performance although especially against a very good team. I would have liked to finish a couple of the opportunities because I think the type chances that we had was better than the one they had,” he added.
