Guinea joined Angola and Nigeria in the quarter final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a last gasp goal from Mohamed Bayo handed the team a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea.

The first real chance of the keenly contested game came five minutes into the second half.

Guinea’s Morgan Guilavogui latched onto a short pass from Mohamed Bayo inside the box, but clipped his shot high over the bar.

Four minutes later, a goal, which was scored by Guinea’s  Mory Konate was disallowed due to offside.

There was a melee in the box, but the referee wasn’t interested in the appeals from Equatorial Guinea for a penalty in the 64th minute but changed his mind after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Emilio Nsue who is the tournament’s top goal scorer failed to score from the penalty as his shot only hits the right post.

In 82nd minute, Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper, Jesus Owono pulled off a fantastic save. Serhou Guirassy attempteed to head home after a precise cross into the box. He aimed his header toward the top of the net, but the effort was kept out.

Guirassy received a brilliant pass and find himself one-on-one with Jesus Owono, who reacted superbly to stop him.

The deadlock was finally broken with the last chance of the game as Mohamed Bayo latched on to a brilliant cross and get his head on the ball to put it inside the right post.

Guinea progressed to the quarter final and will face either Egypt or DR Congo in the last eight.
