A hat-trick from Oumou Kone lifted Mali women’s champions, AS Mande to a 3-0 win over Ghana league winners, Ampem Darkoa in the second Group B match of the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.
She opened the scoring in the 40th minute to the surprise of the Ghanaians before completing her treble with two goals in the second half.
The two goals came within two minutes in the second half in the 71st and 73rd minutes respectively as the match heroine announced herself on the continent after her exploit for the Malians at West African Zone A (WAFU-A) level.
The three goals made her the first player to score a hat-trick at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League which put her name in the tournament’s history book.
She joined two other players who have scored three goals at the two previous editions of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
ASFAR FC’s Sanaa Mssoudy became the first-ever player to score three goals at the CAF Women’s Champions League during the maiden edition in 2021 as she scored a hat-trick when her Moroccan side recorded a 3-0 win against Nigerian side, Rivers Angels on Saturday, November 6, 2021.
In 2022, the best was saved for the last as ASFAR FC’s Ibtissam Jraidi joined her compatriot, Mssoudy in becoming the second player to score three goals in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Jraidi scored three goals in the final of the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League during ASFAR FC’s 4-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa).
Kone also became the first player who is not from Morocco to score a hat trick at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
With the last group games, semi-finals, and final games ahead, one will expect more goals and hat-tricks at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League in Ivory Coast.
