South Africa’s U-20 side have been eliminated from the FIFA U-20 World Cup after a 3–1 defeat to a clinical Colombia in Talca on Tuesday night.
The reigning African champions, coached by Xaniseka Mdaka, showed plenty of spirit but were undone by Colombia’s pace and precision in the final third, bringing their promising campaign to a premature end.
Early Setback
Colombia made a fast start and struck within seven minutes when Joel Canchimbo latched onto a loose ball inside the box and slotted home from close range to make it 1–0.
The goal rattled South Africa, who took time to settle into their rhythm. Midfielder Sanele Nkosi and captain Boitumelo Radiopane worked hard to push the tempo, but Colombia’s backline held firm through the opening half.
Vilakazi’s Equaliser Sparks Hope
After the interval, Amajita found new life. Their pressure paid off in the 51st minute when Mfundo Vilakazi coolly converted from the penalty spot after he was brought down inside the area — his second goal of the tournament.
The equaliser energised the South Africans, who enjoyed a spell of dominance midway through the second half. Yet, just as they appeared to take control, Neyser Villarreal restored Colombia’s advantage with a powerful strike from distance on 63 minutes.
Late Blow Ends the Dream
South Africa threw numbers forward in search of a second equaliser, with substitute Katlego Mohlala forcing a fine save late on. But deep into stoppage time, Villarreal added his second and Colombia’s third on the break to seal a deserved win.
The result means Colombia advance to the quarter-finals, while Amajita bow out after a spirited but inconsistent campaign.
Mdaka: “We Will Learn From This”
Head coach Xaniseka Mdaka praised his players’ character despite the defeat:
“It’s a tough result to take because we matched Colombia for long periods. The difference came down to experience and efficiency in both boxes. These boys will learn and grow from this.”
What’s Next
For South Africa, the exit ends what had been a promising year after lifting the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations earlier in 2025. Several of Mdaka’s standout players — including Vilakazi, Nkosi, and Radiopane — are expected to attract attention from European scouts after strong individual showings.
Colombia, meanwhile, move on to the quarter-finals, where they will face Uruguay for a place in the last four.
