  • Ghana’s Black Princesses emerged victorious at the 13th African Games, outplaying Nigeria to claim the coveted gold medal in women’s football.
  • Mukarama Abdulai’s extraordinary goal in extra time was the decider after a one all draw, in a nail-biting finale against defending champions Nigeria

The Black Princesses of Ghana came from a goal down to defeat Nigeria’s Falconets , 2-1 in the Under 20 women’s football final at the ongoing African Games.

Played at the Cape coast stadium on Thursday, Abdulai’s goal, a masterful shot in the 98th minute of extra time, sent the stadium into a state of wild celebration, as it marked the culmination of a hard-fought battle where Ghana overcame Nigeria’s early lead.

The Falconets had seized an early advantage in the 22nd minute when Loveth Edeh capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Ghanaian team to score the opening goal.

The Black Princesses rallied, restoring parity in the 76th minute with Twum’s equalizing goal, reigniting the match.

The match concluded in a draw at the end of regulation time, yet it was Mukarama Abdulai’s decisive goal in the 90th minute of extra time’s first half that secured the gold medal for Ghana’s women’s team.

While Nigeria’s Falconets have a storied legacy as the tournament’s most decorated team with three gold medals, Ghana’s recent victory underscores their rising prominence and adds a significant gold medal to their growing tally in the African Games’ history.

The hosts now have 11 gold medals in this edition of the African games, with a possibility of winning gold in the men’s football game.

The third place match saw a gripping contest at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium as Uganda triumphed over Senegal in a tense penalty shootout with a score of 6-5, clinching the bronze medal.
