Veteran Mexican goalkeeper, Francisco Guillermo Ochoa Magaña has completed formalities and signed for Cypriot club AEL Limassol
The keeper who repeatedly denied Cameroon during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil spent last season in Portugal. He helped AVS avoid relegation from the topflight and didn’t get a new offer from the club management, thus explaining he switch to Cyprus.
Pundits have been quick to react to his re-appearance in the news with many saying the move to Cyprus is in a bid to prove his fitness to go to a sixth World Cup next year.
“Ochoa’s experience, personality and leadership are expected to significantly strengthen our team’s squad,” AEL said in a statement.
Ochoa has made 152 appearances for Mexico since his debut in 2005 and was first choice at the last three World Cups.
Mexico will co-host the 48-team global showpiece next summer with the United States and Canada.
The 40-year-old former Standard Liege, Malaga and Ajaccio keeper will certainly be an attraction for all and not just Memo Ochoa fans.
