Guinea coach Kaba Diawara, claimed his Silly National players will need to sharpen up in front of goal when they face Ethiopia in match day three of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this Friday.
The West Africans chasing qualification for the 33rd edition of Africa’s prestigious men’s football jamboree face Group D leaders Ethiopia at the Mohammed V stadium in Casablanca, Morocco weary of the quality of their opponents.
Ahead of the game, the ex international cum coach revealed the areas his side must improve on.
“We need to improve the efficiency of the team. We need to score goals to give ourselves a chance of winning. We may regret if we manage to play, create opportunities and we are not efficient. We have great strikers who are prolific at club level, but you know at national level, it’s another level. Today, we are working well on this to correct this problem,” Kaba explained.
Guinea’s football style has always earned admiration from their fans and neutral as well. Kaba believes they must stick to that.
“We must play on the speed, we will play on the quality of the boys’ speed to put in difficulty this team of Ethiopia.
Guinea will have to be without a number of their key players due to injury, but coach Kaba insisted he has sufficient manpower to get a result.
“The group is doing well. We have one or two small physical problems with Sehrou Guirassy, Conté also has a small problem and Morgan also took a blow on his foot yesterday (Thursday). These are small injuries that happen, we will manage that and then we will do the last training session at 8.30 pm on our field.”
Coach Kaba who was his country’s coach at the last AFCON in Cameroon is targeting another finals from the complex group completed by Egypt and Mozambique.
“As it stands we all have three points before this game so if we want to make a difference, we really need to take the three points, so the two games, we must take 6 points.
The trainer complemented Ethiopia for their efforts so far while wishing for an excellent game on the good infrastructures provided by Morocco.
“Ethiopia is a team we respect a lot and it will not be an easy match. They played a friendly match that they won, so we are careful. We followed them a lot on video. We have a lot of respect for this team and have to be careful. I see a team that plays… Really, it is a team that I take seriously, but we will do everything we can to beat them,” reassured Diawara.
Egypt and Malawi who complete the exciting Group D also count three points from their opening two games, but Ethiopia lead the group courtesy of a better goal difference after their 2-0 win against the Pharoahs in match day two.
Guinea and Ethiopia will stay on Moroccan soil after Friday’s game since both nations clash again on Monday in match day four of the qualifiers.
A bunch of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers will be played in Morocco within the next ten days.
The 2023 AFCON tournament is scheduled for January -February 2024 in Cote D’Ivoire.
The host and 23 nations that will make it from the qualifiers will battle to win the crown currently in the keeping of the Teranga Lions of Senegal.
