The Bertoua municipal stadium bore witness to an electrifying showdown as Union Sportive of Abong Mbang clinched the East regional championship title by defeating As Real de Bertoua with a hard-fought scoreline of 2-1.

Renowned for their attacking prowess, the Americans of the East showcased their resilience once more. Despite trailing at halftime due to a 42nd-minute goal, Coach Mahouli and Saboa rallied the team during the second half.

In a dramatic turn of events, Nanga Medjo equalized for the reigning 2023 champions in the 47th minute, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish. Just moments later, Nkel Medjo emerged as the hero, securing the winning goal. The final whistle confirmed Union’s victory: USA 2, AS Real 1.

Having clinched the Eastern Regional League title, this east regional outfit now faces a sterner test. The upcoming national interpool in Yaoundé will pit them against regional champions from the North-West, Littoral, Far north (Sporting FC de Maroua) and the Center region. With ambitions to overcome these formidable opponents and secure a spot in the Elite Two—especially after narrowly missing out in 2023—the team prepares for a high-stakes battle.

Relegated in 1997, this East regional outfit has persevered through numerous attempts to return to the National Elite. The 2024 victory marks a significant milestone, and fans fervently hope it will be the turning point for the club’s resurgence.

As preparations intensify, Union of Abong Mbang will renew acquaintances with familiar opponents, including Volcan du Noun and Sporting de Maroua, who featured last season. The inter-group stage is scheduled from July 1st to 15th, 2024, where teams will fiercely compete for the coveted Elite Two tickets.

Football enthusiasts from the East region eagerly await their team’s performance in the upcoming tournament, hoping for a triumphant return to the national stage.
