In a bid to reverse its declining fortunes, Union Sportive de Douala has carried out a sweeping restructuring of its technical and administrative staff, signaling a fresh attempt to rebuild the club from within.
The headline change sees Hermann Oumarou Sokba appointed as head coach, marking his second spell at the club. He replaces Bonaventure Djonkep, who moves into a new role as general manager—an adjustment that reflects a shift toward a more defined organizational structure.
This reshuffle comes at a critical time for Union, a club that won the MTN Elite One title in 2012 but is now grappling with life in the second division. The restructuring appears aimed not only at improving results on the pitch but also at restoring order and long-term direction behind the scenes.
Sokba returns with a wealth of domestic experience, having previously handled clubs such as APEJES de Mfou—where he lifted the 2016 Cameroon Cup—as well as UMS de Loum, YAFOOT and OFTA de Kribi. His familiarity with Union and the domestic league is expected to be key as the club pushes for stability and eventual promotion.
Around him, a new-look backroom team has been assembled. Djomkam Ndanga and Albert Kapawa take up assistant coaching roles, with Kapawa specifically in charge of goalkeepers. The restructuring also extends beyond the technical bench, with new appointments in medical, logistics, and facility management positions—highlighting a comprehensive approach to rebuilding the club’s internal framework.
For Union of Douala, this is more than just a coaching change. It is a structural reset designed to address years of instability. Whether this reorganization can translate into improved performances and a return to the top flight will be closely watched, but it represents a clear statement of intent from one of Cameroon’s most historic clubs.
