The flying Eagles of Nigeria picked up a 1-0 win against Zambia in their curtain raiser of the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.

G12 football academy strike Favour Oluwasegun Daniel proved decisive for the team at 76th minute when he fired the Golden Eaglets ahead.

The game which was one of the most competitive fixture this far saw both sides determined to walk away with at least a point.

While Nigeria relied on its attacking trio Precious Williams, Abdoullahi and Daniel to get the goals, the Zambians had Aaron Simpasa , Sekanji Siame others to assist Shadrick Kalyati in the defence line,a decision that payed off for both teams.

As early as 13 minutes Abubakar Abdullahi first attempt at goal was flagged offside while Tochukwu Ogbabido failed to orient his shot towards the post.

Into the last 45minutes, Zambia seemed to have had a better reading of the game, commanding ball possessions.

Joseph Liteta created up two clear chances but unfortunately stayed as just attempts.

The appointed time finally presented itself when unmarked Favour Daniel picked up from a corner kick to beat Shadrick Kalyati.

Substitute Light Eke had the golden opportunity to double the lead at extra time but failed to as his tamed efforts was easily saved by Kalyati.

The flying Eagles now lead group B with three points. Their next opponent is North African giants Morocco.
