Burkina Faso have qualified for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite a 1-1 draw this Tuesday, March 28 against Togo at the Kégué stadium, Lome.

Only three points delayed Burkina Faso’s chance of picking up a 13th participation ticket to Ivory and so the group B leaders came into this encounter in search of a draw or win just like the host who denied them three points.

Dango Ouattara and Lava Kodjo Fo Doh gifted their teams a point each in day four of the qualifiers. A point was enough for the Stallions to advance.

Togo started off the better and more offensive side, till about 9’ into the game when the visitors mounted much pressure which eventually paid off less than three minutes later.

21-year-old Ouattara opened scores 12 minutes into the game to give the stallions the lead through a smart shot from inside the box that went straight to the back of Ouro-Gneni’s net.

A lead they could only keep for a short while as Kodjo Fo Doh leveled scores 14 minutes later, following a cross inside the area.

These two teams went for the break on a 1-1 score line. Upon return, Togo had more game volume, hoping to recover from last Friday’s 1-0 loss to Burkina Faso but lacked construction.

Burkina Faso had a chance to double at the 60th minute Traoré came one- on-one with goalkeeper Ouro-Gnoni but his shot went narrowly wide.

Burkina Faso have now extended their winning streak to four games straight unbeaten and still top of group B with now ten points.

Togo came into this encounter bottom of group B with only one point recorded from three games. The team desperately needed the victory to continue dreaming of participating in the tournament scheduled for next year.

The Sparrowhawks last participated in the tournament in 2017 and their chances of picking up a ticket is almost impossible giving that Cape Verde sits second in the group with 7 points following a win over Eswantini.

Meanwhile the stallions finished fourth in the last edition in Cameroon, after losing to the host nation on post match penalties. This will be their 13th appearance at the tournament.
