Sligo Rovers have confirmed the arrival of Cameroonian right-back Jeannot Esua from Galway United on a two-year contract, completing a move that has been widely described in Irish football circles as one of the most notable defensive acquisitions of the off-season. The League of Ireland Premier Division side finalised the deal after successfully convincing the player of their long-term project.

Esua, born in Idenau and raised in Limbe, carries with him the story of a footballer who rose from the coastal streets of Cameroon’s South-West Region to establish himself as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Irish top flight. His formative years in Limbe — a city known for its football passion and production of raw talent — shaped his aggressive, athletic and attack-minded style of play. Those traits would later become hallmarks of his time in Ireland.

At Galway United, Esua’s performances made him impossible to ignore. Across two seasons he played more than 60 league matches, earning praise for his defensive discipline and trademark bursts down the right flank. Irish sources credit him as one of Galway’s most reliable performers, with local media noting his “power, pace and relentless engine” — qualities that caught the eye of rival coaches and scouts throughout the league.

Sligo Rovers manager John Russell expressed delight after securing the deal, describing the Cameroonian as a player he had monitored for a long time. The coach highlighted his speed, aggression and one-on-one defending, calling him “a really big signing for us as we continue building a competitive and energetic squad.” Russell is said to view Esua not only as a starter, but also as a leader capable of driving standards both on and off the pitch.

Esua himself admitted that several clubs had shown interest, but the Sligo project convinced him. “I had offers but I didn’t want to join any club just for the sake of it,” he explained. “I wanted to join a club where I could have a lot of belief in the project, and that was here at Rovers.” His words underline a player determined to take the next step of his career in the right environment.

The defender’s journey from Limbe to Ireland includes previous spells in the United States, Canada and Finland, experiences that contributed to his growth as a mature, tactically aware full-back. Sligo’s recruitment team believe this pedigree will add both balance and stability to their back line as they prepare for a demanding 2026 campaign.

Esua will officially join Sligo Rovers on 1 December 2025, with his contract running until 2027. The club expects him to integrate quickly into Russell’s system, offering defensive assurance and an attacking outlet on the right side — attributes they believe can elevate their performances next season.

For the player, the move represents another step in a remarkable journey that began in coastal Cameroon. For Sligo, it is a strong statement of intent — securing a proven Premier Division full-back at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate impact at The Showgrounds.
