President Samuel Eto’o Fils of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) has warned against riding off the Indomitable Lions at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Côte D’Ivoire.
The AFCON legend had his say about his country’s chances during a flash interview on the sidelines of the Cameroon footballer of the year award ceremony on Saturday at the Palais de Congres in Yaoundé.
Responding to questions about the state and chances of the five-time winners of the tournament ahead of the 33rd edition Eto’o sounded very ambitious while acknowledging many see them as underdogs.
“It is true that we are not expected on the podium final, but do not forget that we are Cameroon and the Cameroon remains Cameroon,” Eto’o began.
Eto’o won two AFCON titles during his days as a player and so understands what it entails to conquer the continent.
However, he has prescribed humility to the team ahead of the 24 nations jamboree in Côte D’Ivoire.
“We will humbly go to Côte D’Ivoire to share this moment of happiness with our African brothers. We hope that our team will have one of the best performances in this tournament,” he added.
Coach Rigobert Song’s Cameroon team head into their 28th AFCON tournament next month in the West African nation hoping to better their third place finish achieved last time out on home soil.
