Rayo Vallecano rallied to achieve a 3-1 win against Enzo Boyomo’s CA Osasuna on Monday night in a delayed match day five game of the 2024/25 Spanish La Liga.
Boyomo and co started well and briefly thought they were on their way to a second successive win when Raul Garcia put them ahead after 27 minutes of the game.
However, an early second half goals from Ghanaian defender Abdul Munim, a strike in the 66th minute from Andrei Ratiu plus a stoppage time assurance finish from Unai Lopez secured all three points at the Vallecas as it made it a third straight home league win against Osasuna for the first time since 1995, moving above their opponents into eighth place in the process.
The game produced swayed in between both clubs throughout before the winner was eventually sealed in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The only shot on target in the first 20 minutes came from Bryan Zaragoza, whose effort was comfortably held by home goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.
Zaragoza continued to provide a threat, going on a mazy dribble before firing wide, and it wasn’t long before García – making his first start of the season – made up for that earlier injustice with a special strike. Osasuna stopper Sergio Herrera’s long boot upfield was flicked on by García, with Mumin making a mess of the subsequent clearance. García duly capitalised, bringing the ball deftly out of the sky to evade Rayo captain Óscar Valentín and volleying it stunningly past Batalla from 20 yards to silence the fans at the Vallecas.
Los Franjirrojos boss Iñigo Pérez would no doubt have been frustrated by his side’s first-half showing against the club where he ended his playing career. No changes were made at the break though, despite recent signing James Rodríguez waiting in the wings for his debut.
Against the expectations of many, unlikely source Mumin equalised on 50 minutes, thundering a shot in off the bar spectacularly from a crazily tight angle on the left edge of the box.
Palazón then went close as Herrera tipped his long ranger around his right-hand post, but he was powerless to stop the hugely energetic Andrei Rațiu, who received a pass from fellow full-back Pep Chavarría before sidefooting home via a deflection off Pablo Ibáñez.
Unai López rounded off proceedings in the 95th minute with a scorcher following a rapid counter-attack, leaving Osasuna 11th in La Liga and looking to get back on track against Las Palmas on Saturday, while Rayo face city rivals Atlético Madrid the following day.
The result means Enzo Boyomo has suffered his first defeat since joining Osasuna late into the summer transfer window.
