  • Samuel Eto’o, finds himself at the center of a storm involving allegations of match-fixing dating back to August 2023 per the query of Cameroon football stakeholders
  • CAF had announced an investigation into these allegations in 2022, which has cast a shadow over Eto’o’s reputation. Motsepe says global standards are being followed

The president of the Cameroon Football federation (FECAFOOT) Samuel Eto’o Fils has requested that his hearing in the presence of the disciplinary bench of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) be aired on Television.

Eto’o made the revelation via his social media handles this Monday, June 24, a day before he appears before the disciplinary body in Cairo.

In a detailed presentation, Eto’o who has been under investigation for match-fixing allegations, corruption, abuse of power and involvement in betting activities stated why he intends to have the event on television.

“The president of the federation Cameroon football team will ask the Confederation of African Football to allow the live broadcast of his hearing before the disciplinary jury before which he will appear on June 25, 2024

This request, which expresses a deep desire for transparency, is in no way an expression of defiance to the entity concerned, far from the point of view, because the credibility of the continental confederation is an imperative that matters to any serious African sporting leader. This request is formulated in order to remove any ambiguity in the context of the immersion of Cameroonian political actors in the procedure, who have allied with identified personal interests.

Samuel Eto’o recalls, if needed, that he led an international career without any cheating and in careful observance of the values of the sport and the rules in force. Therefore, he wishes to wash his honor in the strict respect of his rights to defense of which publicity of audiences is one of the cardinal principles.

Therefore, he intends to associate continental football players and the general public with the search for truth which constitutes the object of this procedure. Considering that the governance of our sport cannot conceal the respect and consideration due to its players, he humbly calls on the CAF to be a glass house where the elected leaders of the member federations are judged with fairness and transparency.

According to our sources, investigations related to the matter brought to the attention of CAF by ‘multiple interested parties’ in Cameroon Football have been completed and reports sent to the disciplinary body which started the next phase of the job on Monday morning.

Eto’o’s request is not in tandem with the guiding principles of the disciplinary board.

Article 49 of the disciplinary code of CAF states that; “the Disciplinary Board deliberates behind closed doors”.

The guiding principles however states that the chairman may upon request allow observers into the hearing by invitation only.

Leaked and Camfoot authenticated audios of a conversation between Samuel Eto’o Fils and president Nkwain Valentine of Victoria United, the alleged audio of match officials getting match results influencing guide from related officials, excerpts of a Victoria United player admitting their capacity to buy games and more have animated the Cameroon Football circle in the last 12 months, leading to complains against president Samuel Eto’o Fils and his crew of collaborators.

A few months ago, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe revealed the investigations against Samuel Eto’o Fils of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) and co are currently following its expected procedure, and a decision will be arrived at per the norms of CAF and FIFA.

The football community in Cameroon is currently on edge as they await the results of the investigations which could have far-reaching consequences on the health of the beautiful game on the continent.

As the football world watches, the outcome of the CAF investigation will have huge implications on football governance in this five time AFCON winning country and beyond.
