  • Andre Onana received a hero’s welcome from thousands of Manchester United fans in Uganda during the AFCON qualifier between Cameroon and Zimbabwe at the Mandela National Stadium
  • The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who joined United from Inter Milan last season, was mobbed by supporters after the match, leading to a security escort for his safety
  • As he embarks on his second season with the Red Devils, Onana aims to build on his impressive debut campaign and further solidify his status among the club’s passionate fan base in Africa

Cameroon and Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana was the main attraction as the Red Devils faithful in Uganda turned out in their numbers to catch a glimpse of their new hero during the AFCON qualifier between Cameroon and Zimbabwe at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.

The 26-year-old custodian was the star of the show as close to 15,000 football fans packed the stadium to see the former Ajax man in action for his national team. The Ugandan supporters created a carnival atmosphere, chanting and cheering Onana’s name throughout the 0-0 stalemate.

Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan last season, hit the ground running at Old Trafford, playing a pivotal role in the Red Devils’ FA Cup triumph last season. The towering goalkeeper kept nine clean sheets in 18 wins, making a league-high 149 saves, including a stunning stop against Burnley that earned him the Save of the Month award.

However, the post-match scenes turned chaotic as hundreds of fans swarmed the United No. 24, desperate to get up close to their hero. For his safety, Onana was whisked away in a Toyota Premio, accompanied by teammates Olivier Ntcham and Christopher Wooh, with the rest of the squad to leave in the team bus.

Manchester United boast a massive following in Africa, with a Facebook group of Ugandan supporters alone numbering close to 600,000 members. Onana’s arrival at the Theatre of Dreams has only served to amplify the Red Devils’ popularity on the continent.

As Onana returns for the premier league action against southampton this Saturday September 14, the shot-stopper will be looking to build on this impressive support to override the bad results gotten against Liverpool just before the international break.
