Nigeria goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo is on cloud nine after being the only player from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in the Super Eagles squad for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.
The Enyimba goalie says it is a privilege to be the sole representative from Nigeria domestic league at AFCON 2023.
He made this known during the team media day in Abidjan on Tuesday.
“I feel honoured and grateful to God and I appreciate every other NPFL players at home for their support,” Ojo told journalists.
“I thank God that a day like this is here. I see it as just a privilege, grace, and favour that I enjoyed from Almighty God to be here today. It don’t really matter if I am the best in the league or not. It is just grace that I found. It can also happen to everyone. I am grateful that it is me today and another person tomorrow.”
The three time African champions started their AFCON 2023 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Guinea Bissau on Sunday.
Ahead of their next match with host, Cote D’Ivoire, Ojo is seeking for numerous support from football fans back home to spur the team to victory.
“We are prepared. Everyone in the camp is prepared with the fact that we know what is at stake. It is a must win match for us and not a match that we must lose. We are very ready as a team and as individuals. Anyone called upon is ready and will give his best and we are trusting in God that it will be a very good result for us on Thursday.
“I think that is what we are here for. We are not here to make the numbers but to compete and see that we win. All I want from them is the support and prayers. TRhey should not give up on us and believe that under any circumstances we would come good.
“This is my first time in the AFCON. I have played on the continent. I have always seen how other countries and clubs are being supported at home. I want the same thing to happen to us. Even when we don’t pay well which happen at the highest level. There are things that we want to do even as individuals but won’t work. It doesn’t mean that shouldn’t stop them from believing in us.” He concluded.
