Mamelodi Sundowns, have appointed astute Portuguese manager José Miguel Azevedo Cardoso as their new head coach, in replacement of Manqoba Mngqithi.

The 52-year-old Portuguese tactician, who had previous stints Espérance de Tunis, FC Nantes, Sporting CP amongst others is expected to bring a wealth of experience and tactical knowhow to the Tshwane giants who have faced a see-saw start to the current season and remain winless after two CAF Champions League outings.

Cardoso is expected to join Sundowns with his own technical team, comprised of Fabio Fernandez as the first assistant coach, Joaquim Pedro Azevedo as the second assistant coach, and Joao Araujo as the third assistant coach plus Steve Kompela who returns as part of the staff.

The former Braga, Rio Ave and Celta coach is expected to improve on the recent performances which fell short of the club’s high expectations.

The Portuguese manager will thus make his debut in South African football after stints in Portugal—where he managed —Spain, France, Greece, and Tunisia.

Miguel Cardoso could therefore add to the growing number of Portuguese coaches at the Club World Cup, joining Jorge Jesus, Abel Ferreira, Artur Jorge, Leonardo Jardim, Bruno Lage, and Vítor Bruno, who currently manage clubs participating in the tournament scheduled in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
