Cameroon made a better showing at the 23rd African Senior Athletics Championship, held in Douala . From an initial three medals in 2022, they finished this edition with a total of seven medals—three silver and four bronze—across various disciplines.

The six-day event concluded on June 26, with intense competition and outstanding performances. Notable achievements include:

Emmanuel Eseme in sprint. The 29-year-old Secured a silver medal in the men’s 100m with a swift time of 10.15 seconds.He also earned a bronze in the men’s 200m, where slippery tracks due to rain affected his performance.

Linda Angounou, the Cameroonian sprint champion clinched bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles, finishing in 56.48 seconds. Despite challenges, she explains securing a medal on home soil was a significant accomplishment

Cameroon excelled in the triple jump, with three medals from three different athletes:
Anne Suzanne Fosther leaped to second place in the women’s triple jump, covering 13.45 meters.Veronique Kossendra secured bronze with a jump of 13.35 meters and Raymond Kwemy stood on the podium with a bronze in the men’s category.

In the Women’s Heptathlon, Adèle Mafongang accumulated 5527 points across seven different challenges, securing a silver medal for Cameroon.

Overall, Cameroon finished in 14th place, an impressive feat considering the tough competition. South Africa claimed first place with 20 medals (seven gold, five silver, and eight bronze), followed by Kenya (five gold, seven silver, seven bronze) and Nigeria (15 medals: five gold, six silver, and four bronze).

This championship served as preparation for Africa’s representatives ahead of the upcoming Olympics, providing an opportunity for some athletes to secure their qualification tickets.
