The Nigeria senior women’s basketball team has emerged as the winners of the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket after an 84-74 win over Senegal in the final match at the BK Arena, Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday.
D’Tigres won three of four quarters 19-10, 24-21, 19-26, 22-17.
The win sealed a fourth straight African title for the West African side which was a record feat as far as women’s basketball is concerned in Africa.
Rena Wakama’s tutored side won all five games in the tournament against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Senegal.
Nigeria has previously won the championship in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, and 2021, making the team one of the most decorated sides in the championship history.
Wakama also made history by becoming the first women’s coach to lead her team to clinch the championship. She was the only women’s coach in the championship.
