Morocco is breaking grounds on the construction of Stade Hassan II, poised to be the world’s largest stadium.

Situated in Benslimane, near Casablanca, this state-of-the-art arena is named after the late King Hassan II and is set to be a beacon of architectural brilliance and a pivotal hub for football in Morocco.

With a gigantic seating capacity of 115,000, Stade Hassan II will surpass the current giant, Pyongyang’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, which seats 114,000.

Designed by the internationally renowned firm Populous in collaboration with Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi, the stadium’s architecture draws inspiration from Morocco’s traditional ‘moussem’ tents. The standout feature is a grand aluminum lattice roof supported by 32 staircases, ensuring a spectacular visual impact.

The stadium will boast five levels of hospitality along the main stands, set to host approximately 12,000 VIPs, VVIPs, and hospitality guests, including a prestigious royal box.

This massive project began its groundwork in October 2023 and is slated for completion in 2028, just in time to host matches for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

Stade Hassan II is not just an architectural marvel but a cultural and economic boon for Morocco. The design integrates botanical gardens and green spaces, creating an oasis-like environment for spectators.

From an economic perspective, the project has secured approximately MAD 5 billion (USD 490 million) in financing through a partnership between the Moroccan government and the state-owned financial institution, Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG).

Upon completion, Stade Hassan II will serve as the home ground for the Moroccan national football team and major clubs, Raja CA and Wydad AC. This project underscores Morocco’s ambition and vision to establish itself as a global sporting powerhouse.
