Mohamed Salah has officially eclipsed Didier Drogba to become the highest-scoring African player in Champions League history.

The ‘Egyptian King’, now 32, etched his name in the record books during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Bologna. Salah set up Alexis Mac Allister for the opener before unleashing a sensational strike that rocketed into the net for his landmark goal.

This remarkable effort marked Salah’s 45th Champions League goal and his 16th assist across 81 appearances in the competition.

With this achievement, Salah surpasses Drogba, who sits at 44 goals from 92 matches. Following closely behind is Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o, a three-time Champions League winner, who ranks third with 30 goals in 78 games.

Completing the top five are former Premier League stars Sadio Mané and Riyad Mahrez, both currently plying their trade in Saudi Arabia.

Salah’s Champions League odyssey began with Basel during the 2013/14 season, where he made an immediate impact by scoring twice. Since then, he has found the back of the net 42 times for Liverpool and once for Roma in 2015.

He is just one goal away from matching legends Eusebio and Filippo Inzaghi, while five more goals would catapult him into the all-time top ten alongside Thierry Henry.

In addition to his record-breaking goal, Salah became the first player to both score and assist in nine different Champions League matches for an English club.

His strike against Bologna also set another Liverpool milestone, as he became the first player to score in five consecutive Champions League campaigns at Anfield.

As Salah’s tenure at Anfield approaches its twilight, the 32-year-old has attracted interest from several top clubs eager to secure his services.
