The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon secured a dramatic late victory over reigning African champions Nigeria on Saturday, February 28, at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from substitute Yvanna Mbomozomo.

In what was a high-profile international friendly, coach Josephine Mike Ndoumou’s side delivered an assured and disciplined performance against their long-time rivals. The Lionesses held Nigeria to a goalless draw throughout the first half and remained resolute for most of the encounter despite sustained pressure from the visitors.

Fielding a squad made up entirely of 25 home-based players, Ndoumou passed her first major test with flying colours. Few would have predicted such an outcome against an experienced Nigerian side boasting stars such as CAF Goalkeeper of the Year Chiamaka Nnadozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the 2024 WAFCON Player of the Tournament.

At the heart of Cameroon’s resilience was Abumba Clarisse, who delivered a Woman of the Match performance. Commanding and composed, she marshalled the defence superbly, working in tandem with captain and goalkeeper Ange Bawou to keep the Super Falcons at bay and preserve a clean sheet.

Nigeria created several promising chances, particularly in the second half, but their attacking line found Cameroon’s defensive wall difficult to break down. The Lionesses’ organisation and discipline frustrated the visitors throughout the game.

Tim Shalom Makoma was one of the standout performers in the first half and continued her impressive display after the break. One moment in particular brought fans to their feet — a dazzling dribble past Omorinsola Babajide before releasing a teammate in space. It was arguably one of the most eye-catching moments of the match.

Cameroon nearly took the lead earlier in the second half when Nyimpa found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to send her effort off target.

But the decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Mbomozono, introduced as a substitute, capitalised on her opportunity with a superbly taken strike that sent the Military Stadium into wild celebration. Her goal not only secured victory but also restored national pride, ending Nigeria’s long-standing dominance over Cameroon dating back to 2015.

The friendly was part of a double-header designed to help both nations prepare for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which has recently been postponed.

For Cameroon, however, this victory will resonate far beyond preparation — it marks a statement of intent.
