  • Mbahbi has joined Cotonsport of Garoua on a two-year contract from Gazelle FA
  • The 24-year-old will become one of the options for Cotonsport’s goalkeeper position

Experienced Cameroonian goalkeeper, Marcelin Mbahbi has completed a switch from Gazelle FA of Garoua to city rivals Cotonsport, bringing an end to his three-year stay on the books of the second biggest club in the city.

The first choice keeper for Cameroon’s Intermediate national team has penned a two-year contract with the Cotonites who look to fill the void created by the departure of Gadin Allabatnan, Wendeu Lako and Jean Daniel Stephane Nyeck II.

Mbahbi,27, once of Eding Sport de la Lekie is expected to be a serious contender for the first choice keeper position next season though it will all depend on the evaluation of goalkeeper trainer and deputy coach Saidou Hamadjoda.

Mbahbi has gradually developed his reputation as one of the best keeper in the land, having discovered Elite football via Eding Sport de la Lekie as understudy keeper to Jean Oscar Kalati Gwot before moving to Gazelle FA in 2021 to become their undisputed number one.

Cotonsport endured a disappointing last season, failing to win at least a trophy, which is the minimum for the club every season.

The below par campaign has subject the club to a situation of a mass overhaul in their personnel, including adjustment in their technical crew as French Man Daniel Breard who was in charge last season has been technically pushed aside and Bonaventure Djonkep plus Minkreo Birwe appointed operational trainers of the team.

Through all this, Mbahbi couldn’t have wished for a better time to join Cotonsport as not only does he arrive when there’s no established goalkeeper, he walks in and meets a new technical crew piloting the affairs of the club.

The new 16-club MTN Elite One championship is expected to begin in October with record champions Cotonsport being one of the favourites despite falling short against Victoria United FC last season.
