Joel Job Matip will end an eight-year stint and leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season.
The Merseyside club announced this Friday that the defender who has made 10 appearances this season but hasn’t featured since December due to a Cruciate Ligament injury is in the final days of his status as a Liverpool player and appreciates him for his enormous contribution to their recent successes.
Signed in 2016, the No.32 made 201 appearances and lifted a host of major honours while at Anfield, including the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League a year later.
Through his struggles with injuries, Matip still found a way to leave a lasting impression in the hearts of the Reds fans and his manger.
“In all the years that I have been involved in football, I am not sure I have come across too many players who are more loved than Joel Matip.
“I’m not even sure it would be possible to say anything bad about him,” Klopp the manager who brought Matip from Schalke and made him feature 32 times in his maiden season at Liverpool, exhibiting his trademark blend of strength, aerial ability and technique on the ball as Klopp’s side secured a return to Champions League football said.
“A wonderful professional, a wonderful footballer and a wonderful human being – we have been blessed to have him with us for as long as we have and now all we can do is wish him well as he heads off in a new direction.
“Matip’s qualities as a player are there for all to see and as a club we have benefited from them since the first moment that he joined. I don’t think he has had too many headlines over the years but he has only ever been a very famous figure within our group. Thiago and Joel Matip will leave together and these are the latter’s words before departure.
“It has been eight wonderful years here in Liverpool,” he said.
“I was allowed to be part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club. We have achieved great titles and have the best fans in the world.
“I am full of gratitude for the wonderful time I was able to experience with these unique people supporting the club and the fans who love Liverpool FC.
“My wife and I have felt welcomed and supported from day one and together with the kids we had the best imaginable time here.We will always keep it in special memories.”
Matip, 32, joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 while Thiago, 33, joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich for an initial £20million back in 2020.Matip’s final game for Liverpool was the 4-3 victory over Fulham in December, where he suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Liverpool will conclude the 2023-24 season against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. B Reflecting on his time on Merseyside, Matip explained the gratitude and affection he and his family will take away with them.
