Steaua Bucaresti have progressed to the third round of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League following their hard-earned 1-0 win against Macabi Tel Aviv last night in the Israeli capital.
Substitute William Baeten climbed off the bench to score a 90th minute winner on the night Elias Charalambous’ men showed hearts in the face of the hostile fans at the Bozsik Aréna.
Just like the first-leg game a week earlier, both sides were resolute in defending and made chances hard to have especially knowing the first-leg game hard ended in 1-1 a week earlier.
The first segment of the second leg tie produced very few moments in front of goal but the moment of the overall tie was before the start of the second segment when Charalambous introduced Baeten for the visitors.
FCSB looked more threatening upon the entry of the 25-year-old left it late to score the winner at the 90th minute, bringing an end to Macabi Tel Aviv’s promising Champions League campaign.
The 2-1 aggregate win means Steaua București through to the next round of the competition and books an appointment against Sparta Prague of the Czech Republic.
The first-leg fourth round preliminaries will be played on August 6 in in Prague while the reversed fixture is scheduled in a week from the first-leg in Bucaresti.
The winner of round will progress to the final stage of the UEFA Champions League to be played in a different format this season.
