Garoua is set to host an array of distinguished personalities this Friday following the funeral of Issa Hayatou, the former president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the interim president of FIFA.

Hayatou, who passed away on the 8th of August in France, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Garoua on the 16th of August.

Given Hayatou’s renowned career and leadership roles in African and global football, his funeral is expected to be a momentous occasion.

Among the high-profile figures already confirmed to attend are Ahmad Ahmad , the former president of CAF, and Constant Omari, the former secretary-general.

Additionally, the current presidents of CAF and FIFA, Patrice Motsepe and Gianni Infantino, respectively, are also announced to be present.

However, the funeral ceremony of the longest-serving CAF president will witness the face-off of Ahmad and Infantino, as they will cross paths again ever since Ahmad’s dramatic ousting from his role as CAF president, as rumors have it that his removal was highly influenced by Infantino.

Ahmad, on the other hand, was banned for five years over breaches of codes relating to his duty of loyalty, abuse of position, and misappropriation of funds, all leading to him being the first CAF president to be banned.

The funeral is expected to draw a large gathering of presidents of football federations and former football greats, all joining Cameroonian citizens to pay their final tributes to Issa Hayatou.
