  • The team is gearing up to face Paynesville FC of Liberia in the Confederation Cup, with the first leg scheduled for mid-August
  • Coach Ousmanou’s immediate challenge is to rebuild the squad after several key players left, leveraging his extensive experience in continental competitions

Badamassi Souley has completed a switch from ambitious Southwest football franchise, Isle of Hope Sports Academy (ISOHSA) to Fovu of Baham who will be competing in the preliminaries of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup.

We understand officials of the Limbe-based outfit reached an agreement with officials of the Yongwa Boys within the past 48 hours and completed administrative formalities for the move.

Badamassi, 27, joined the 2024 Cup of Cameroon semi-finalist from Canon Yaoundé last January as part of reinforcement for the playoffs which the club finished top of the eight-club competition.

Souley, former Eding Sport and Cotonsport Academy player will reunite with coach Christophe Outsmanou at Fovu, who selected him on a number of occasions for Cameroon’s U-20 team and has been pivotal in his career.

Badamassi is already training with the rest of his new colleagues after receiving a message of congratulations and well wishes from the ISOHSA management.

“You were great in your time at our club, unfortunately we have to give you the chance to play in the CAF Confederation Cup so that you can share the experience with us one day as our doors are always open for you whenever you want to make a stop again,” a release letter from president Karl Njomo Mokake read.

The switch to Fovu means, Badamassi will have another season in the second tier championship as Fovu were relegated at the end of last season.

President Karl however explained the reason behind transfering the midfielder to Fovu who will also be battling for a promotion spot.

“Fovu approached us with a clear sports plan and are representing the nation, so we had to find a solution for all parties involved. In all we are happy for Souley, appreciate his contribution and wish him all the best at Fovu,”.

The Baham outfit is preparing to face Orange Cup winners Paynesville FC of Liberia in the Confederation Cup in August.

Relegated to Cameroon’s top tier, with many of its Cup of Cameroon-winning players off the team, Coach Ousmanou is trying to assemble a squad capable of having a good run in the competition.

The coach is no stranger to such competition, having served as assistant coach and eventual head coach of Cotonsport of Garoua back in 2021 when they reached the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup.

Ousmanou’s experience in continental competitions, coupled with the club’s history in such tournaments, is expected to produce positive results against the debutants from Liberia.

In the past, Fovu made one appearance in the CAF Champions League (in 2001, reaching the First Round) and one appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup (in 2011 during the Preliminary Round). They also participated in the CAF Winner’s Cup in 2002, reaching the Second Round.

The team boasts a championship title from 2002, three Cup of Cameroon trophies (in 2001, 2010, and 2023), and two Cameroon Super Cup victories (in 2000 and 2001). Additionally, they were finalists in the UNIFFAC Cup in 2006.

Reports suggest that the coach has initiated the signing of four players to join and strengthen the club.

Paynesville FC, although new to CAF competitions, boasts a roster filled with seasoned players who have competed in the Champions League, Confederation Cup, and represented the national team.

Coach Dominic Savice, who has successfully guided the team from the third division to the first division within three years, faces the challenge of delivering results, especially given the significant investments made in the club.

The first-leg of the encounter is scheduled to take place in Paynesville, Liberia, between August 16-18, 2024, with the return leg set for Cameroon between August 23-25.

The winner of this match will advance to face Stade Malien of Mali in the 2nd Preliminary Round.
