In game day 1 of the 2024 Totalenergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosts have experienced mixed fortunes. Tanzania and Kenya kicked off their campaigns on a high note, securing impressive victories.

However, Uganda’s journey took a different turn as they faced a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Algeria, ending the hosts’ unbeaten record in game day 1 of the tournament.

The tournament began on a positive note for the co-hosts, Tanzania and Kenya claiming wins in their respective matches.

Tanzania started their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The Taifa Stars dominated the match, with Abdul Sopu scoring a composed penalty in the first half and defender Mohamed Hussein sealing the win with a powerful header in the 71st minute.

As for Kenya, Benni McCarthy “pulled the rabbit out of the hat” with a tactical masterclass as Kenya’s Harambee Stars recorded a historic 1-0 victory over DR Congo.

The winning goal came in the 45th minute, courtesy of Austin Odhiambo’s stunning solo effort, which sealed the win for Kenya.

However, the spotlight shifted to the match between Uganda and Algeria, where the co-hosts’ unbeaten record was on the line. Uganda’s defense was breached three times by the Algerian juggernaut, leading to a convincing 3-0 win for the North Africans.Algeria’s captain, Ayoub Ghezala opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a precise header from a corner kick, punishing Uganda for a lapse in defensive concentration.

Meziane doubled the lead in the 76th minute, finishing a flowing move with precision. Substitute Soufiane Beyazid sealed the win with a cool finish three minutes later, capping a ruthless attacking display.

The defeat ultimately means an unwanted setback for Uganda, as the Cranes must try to get their campaign on track against Guinea on game day 2.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the hosts and their competitors, each vying for the coveted title. The wins by Tanzania and Kenya have injected momentum into local fans, while Uganda will look to regroup and bounce back.
