Guinea’s coach, Souleymane Camara, has finalized preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), just days before the competition kicks off.
Under Camara’s leadership, Guinea has geared up for the tournament with high-profile friendlies against Senegal, which ended in a 0-0 draw and a 1-0 loss.
The team recently shared spoils with CHAN debutants CAR, a result that coach Camara believes would have been different if his players had converted their chances.
En route to their fourth CHAN finals, Guinea dominated Guinea-Bissau 6-2 on aggregate, but finding the end product in the final third has proven elusive in recent friendlies.
“Our recent friendly against CAR was a game of two halves,” Souleymane Camara stated. “CAR dominated the first half, while we had to dig deep for the equalizer in the second half,” Camara revealed to in an exclusive chat with kick442.com.
Analyzing the team’s training camps in Morocco and Cameroon, the former Sily under-17 head coach added, “The first camp in Morocco was intense, with a focus on physical and tactical work. We have a positive report from both camps, but we need to improve our fundamentals, such as finishing.”
“I am happy with what we’ve achieved as a team in Morocco and Cameroon,” he said, voicing his satisfaction with the team’s level of preparedness.
Guinea aims to build on their best-ever performance in 2020, where they finished third in the CHAN. According to coach Souleymane, there is a strong will to beat that feat: “We are determined to go as far as we can in this competition. We finished third in 2020, and if we want to surpass that, we must qualify for the final.” He spoke after the team’s last preparation game before the start of the competition.
Guinea is grouped with Uganda, Niger, Algeria, and South Africa in Group C. They will face Uganda on August 8, 2025, Algeria on August 15, 2025, South Africa on August 11, 2025, and Niger on August 4, 2025.
