African champions, South Africa are through to the knockout stages of the 2023 FIFA World Cup for the first time after coming from behind to beat Italy 3-2.<\/p>\n

Le Azzurre took the lead from the spot in the 11th minute through Arianna Caruso, but South Africa penned them back through an own goal when Benedetta Orsi played a blind backpass which beat Francesca Durante.<\/p>\n

In the second half, Hildah Magaia gave them the lead with a lovely lifted finish.<\/p>\n

Less than 10 minutes later, they were pegged back though as Caruso turned in a corner from close range.<\/p>\n

The game wasn’t done yet though, with Thembi Kgatlana slotting in from close range in the 92nd minute to get South Africa’s first Women’s World Cup win ever.<\/p>\n

South Africa joined Sweden in the round of 16, and as the Group G runners-up, they will be facing the Netherlands on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Italy were looking to make it out of the group stage for the second consecutive tournament, but they finished third on three points.<\/p>\n
