The number of footballers and supporters who died in a car accident on Saturday evening in the Northern Region of Malawi has shot to 25.<\/p>\n
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has confirmed that the death-toll has risen following the demise of Nyungwe FC\u2019s latest player, Gaula Nyirenda, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
FAM President Walter Nyamilandu has since sent his condolences to the bereaved families.<\/p>\n
“We are in deep shock with the tragedy that has befallen us. We share the pain and agony that the Nyirenda family and all other families as well as the community of Nyungwe are going through,\u201d Nyamilandu said.<\/p>\n

“The tragedy has caused untold suffering and inflicted a traumatic experience that will linger in our memories forever. May the soul of Nyirenda and all our departed brothers and sisters rest in eternal peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined the Malawi football fraternity in mourning the death of Nyungwe FC players and supporters after a lorry they were travelling in overturned in Karonga District which shares borders with Tanzania.<\/p>\n
\u201cI extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the road accident involving members of Nyungwe United Football Club who were returning after playing a domestic fixture,\u201d Infantino said.<\/p>\n
FIFA lowered its flags to a half-mast at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland in honour of the victims of the accident.<\/p>\n
Nyungwe players and the fans were involved in the car accident while travelling back from a third tier Northern Region Moto Division One League fixture against Chitipa Hammers on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The accident happened around Tenenthe area where the 10-tonne lorry failed to negotiate a bend and overturned killing 24 people in the process.<\/p>\n
Overall, 85 people, who were on board the lorry, were involved in the accident, 35 are still hospitalized and 26 were discharged.<\/p>\n
