FIFA President Gianni Infantino has joined the Malawi football fraternity in mourning the death of 22 players and supporters of a lower league football team in the Northern Region on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n
Nyungwe FC players and supporters died after a lorry they were travelling in from a second-tier regional match overturned in Karonga District which shares Northern borders with Tanzania.<\/p>\n
\u201cI extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the road accident involving members of Nyungwe United Football Club who were returning after playing a domestic fixture,\u201d Infantino said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with the people who lost their lives, those who have been injured in this tragic accident, and the staff at the Football Association of Malawi at this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

FIFA lowered its flags at half-mast at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland in honour of the victims of the accident.<\/p>\n

Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu has since described Nyungwe as a community club which shares a special bond with fans and players.<\/p>\n

The accident happened around Tenenthe area where the 10-tonne lorry failed to negotiate a bend and overturned killing 24 people in the process.<\/p>\n
Nyungwe FC players and fans were on their home to Karonga from neighbouring district of Chitipa where they played a lower league match.<\/p>\n
Overall, 85 people, who were on board the lorry, were involved in the accident, 35 are still hospitalized and 26 were discharged.<\/p>\n
