Samuel Eto’o Fils, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has opted to maintain Rigobert Song as the head coach of the country’s lead men’s football team – the Indomitable Lions, despite calls for the latter to be sacked.<\/p>\n
Song’s admiration by Cameroonians has taken a hit lately following the dwindling performances recorded by the Indomitable Lions, leading to calls for him to be sacked.<\/p>\n
Calls about the dismissal of Song heightened this month after Cameroon lost and recorded a draw against Namibia in two 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier matches.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, March 30, FECAFOOT officials led by Eto’o held a working session with all coaches of the national teams prompting speculations that Song and other trainers could be in trouble, but it wasn’t to be.<\/p>\n
“It was an evaluation meeting. We had to evaluate the performances of the different national teams with the objective of looking at what has been done and what is still to be done or what was not well done and how to do better,” Engelbert Mbarga, the assistant national technical director told CRTV after the meeting.<\/p>\n
The above outing confirmed Song and other national team coaches will stay on duty till further notice.<\/p>\n
Song replaced Antonio Conceicao Da Silva Oliveira in February of last year but hasn’t carried himself in glory. In 12 games as coach of Cameroon he has won three and lost five, while the other four ended in a draw.<\/p>\n
Cameroon, leader of their AFCON qualifier group, has a free June international window during which they can negotiate friendly games.<\/p>\n
Song’s team will however have to buckle up in September when the Swallows of Burundi come to Yaounde for a winner-take-all final AFCON qualifier match.<\/p>\n
