Indomitable Lion of Cameroon\u2019s captain, Vincent Aboubakar will not feature in the upcoming 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers clash at home against Namibia.<\/p>\n
This is due to the red card received during Cameroon’s 2022 FIFA World Cup game against Brazil last December.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old striker was sent off deep in additional time for taking off his shirt after scoring the lone goal against tournament favourites, Brazil. His second bookable offense of the encounter after fouling Gabriel Martinelli.<\/p>\n
Seemingly unconscious he had been booked, Aboubakar could not help but celebrate scoring the winner against Brazil in the last World Cul group stage game, to leave the tournament on a high, though prematurely.<\/p>\n
Shockingly, Aboubakar exhibited a show of humility as he was sent off, a scene considered to be one of the rare moments in the history of the game. The captain accepted the dismissal and even shook the referee’s hand.<\/p>\n
Referee Ismail Elfath returned the unapologetic smile and slight embrace, but had no choice than to issue the second yellow to Aboubakar as the rules of the game stipulates.<\/p>\n
Rigobert Song Bahanag and his boys have not been involved in any International encounter since then. The first will be against Namibia at home on March 24,2023. He will have to do without his team captain. However, he will be available for the match day four game on March 28 in South Africa.<\/p>\n
The Besiktas forward leads a 24-man list summoned by Rigobert song ahead of the double header clash, for a ticket to the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n
As a reminder, Aboubakar\u2019s significant and memorable goal against Brazil, ensured Cameroon become the first African nation to defeat Brazil at a World Cup and also ended Brazil’s 17-game unbeaten streak in the group stage of the competition.<\/p>\n
The goal eventually earned Cameroon\u2019s first World Cup win since 2002, when Samuel Eto’o scored the lone winning goal against Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
