Achraf Hakimi has another strong opportunity to underline his status as Africa\u2019s leading footballer, with the Paris Saint-Germain defender emerging as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 CAF Men\u2019s Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n
The Moroccan captain, who claimed the prestigious individual honour in 2025, is back among the ten nominees for this year\u2019s edition. And judging by his achievements over the past year, Hakimi has arguably done enough to deserve another coronation.<\/p>\n
His strongest argument is the remarkable consistency with which he has performed at the highest level. At Paris Saint-Germain, the 27-year-old has remained a central figure in a team that has enjoyed extraordinary success, including consecutive UEFA Champions League triumphs in 2025 and 2026. He has also contributed to PSG\u2019s domestic dominance and European achievements, further strengthening his individual credentials.<\/p>\n
Internationally, Hakimi has continued to lead Morocco\u2019s golden generation. Having captained the Atlas Lions to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, following their historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he has maintained his influence on the international stage, with Morocco also reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n
Beyond the trophies, Hakimi\u2019s individual performances distinguish him from many of his competitors. His attacking contribution, defensive responsibilities, tactical intelligence and ability to influence important matches make him much more than an ordinary right-back. He has established himself among the world\u2019s elite players in his position, combining the qualities of a defender with the creativity and productivity of an attacking player.<\/p>\n
His growing international recognition provides another powerful argument. Hakimi is among the 26 finalists for the 2026 FIFPRO Men\u2019s World 11, making him the only representative of an African national team on the shortlist. The recognition follows votes from 19,806 professional male footballers across 73 countries, offering significant evidence of the respect he commands among his peers. He was also included in the 2025 FIFPRO World 11.<\/p>\n
Competition for the African crown will nevertheless be fierce. Former winner Sadio Man\u00e9, Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo, Ivorian Amad Diallo, Congolese striker Yoane Wissa, Moroccan Brahim Diaz and several other outstanding performers are also in contention.<\/p>\n
However, Hakimi\u2019s combination of collective success, individual excellence and leadership gives him a particularly convincing case. He has delivered with PSG, inspired Morocco and continued to represent African football among the world\u2019s best.<\/p>\n
A second consecutive African Player of the Year award would further cement his place among the continent\u2019s greatest footballers. More importantly, it would recognise a player whose influence extends beyond his position and whose achievements continue to raise the profile of African football globally.<\/p>\n
