Zambia’s Red Arrows shattered Kaizer Chiefs’ continental ambitions on Friday night, winning 3-2 on penalties after a 1-0 defeat in regulation time to secure a historic place in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup group stage. The Zambian outfit held their nerve at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, eliminating the South African giants 3-2 in the shootout after the two-legged tie finished 1-1 on aggregate.

Kaizer Chiefs entered the return leg needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and appeared determined to make home advantage count. However, despite enjoying periods of possession and creating several opportunities, the hosts struggled to find the breakthrough during a frustrating first half. Thulani Mabaso tested the Red Arrows goalkeeper early on, while Pule Mmodi missed a promising headed opportunity as the visitors defended resolutely to preserve their aggregate advantage.

Chiefs intensified their efforts after the interval, with coach Fernando da Cruz introducing Mfundo Vilakazi to inject greater creativity into the attack. The substitution paid off in the 65th minute when Vilakazi delivered a dangerous free-kick that Bradley Cross met with a well-placed header to put the hosts ahead on the night and level the aggregate score at 1-1. The goal sparked fresh belief among the home supporters, but Chiefs failed to find the decisive second goal despite further opportunities through Mduduzi Shabalala and other attacking players.

With neither side able to settle the tie in normal time, penalties became necessary to determine who would advance to the group stage. Kaizer Chiefs endured a nightmare from the spot, with Lebohang Maboe, Reeve Frosler and Ethan Chislett all failing to convert their attempts. Red Arrows, meanwhile, showed greater composure under pressure, converting enough of their kicks to secure a 3-2 shootout victory and silence the home crowd. Goalkeeper Charles Kalumba also played a crucial role, producing important interventions during the contest and saving a penalty in the shootout.

The qualification represents a landmark achievement for Red Arrows, who have reached the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in their history. For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat is a painful setback after their return to continental competition raised hopes of another extended campaign. The Soweto giants must now turn their attention to domestic football, while Red Arrows prepare to test themselves against some of Africa’s leading clubs when the group stage begins in November.
