Canon Sportif de Yaound\u00e9 have become the latest major Cameroonian club to be hit by a FIFA registration ban after failing to settle a financial obligation owed to Togolese player Cofie Madje Koudeka. The sanction prevents the historic club from registering new players and could remain in place for up to three complete and consecutive registration periods if the dispute is not resolved.<\/p>\n
Koudeka, who has previously featured for clubs including Coton Sport de Garoua and Fovu Club of Baham, spent the 2025 season with Canon Sportif. His dispute with the Yaound\u00e9 club eventually reached FIFA after the financial obligation was not settled, leaving Canon facing a potentially damaging restriction at a time when squad building and recruitment are crucial to their sporting ambitions.<\/p>\n
Canon are, however, not the first Cameroonian giant to suffer the consequences of a contractual dispute. Coton Sport de Garoua faced a similar FIFA registration ban following their dispute with former coach Daniel Br\u00e9ard. FIFA ordered the club to pay more than 44 million FCFA in outstanding remuneration and compensation after the disagreement over the coach\u2019s contract and its termination.<\/p>\n
The Coton Sport case eventually dragged the Garoua club into a lengthy legal battle before the financial obligation was settled and the registration restriction lifted in 2026. For Coton, what began as a contractual disagreement with one coach developed into a sporting problem that affected the club\u2019s ability to reinforce its squad and operate normally in the transfer market.<\/p>\n
The two cases raise a bigger concern about contractual discipline in Cameroonian football. When clubs fail to honour agreements with players or coaches, those individuals are often forced to pursue lengthy procedures simply to recover money they believe they are owed. By the time FIFA becomes involved, however, the consequences can extend beyond the original dispute and affect the club, its supporters and its sporting ambitions.<\/p>\n
That leaves an important question for FECAFOOT and the wider football authorities: should stronger domestic mechanisms be introduced to ensure clubs honour their contractual obligations before disputes escalate to FIFA? Preventing these cases from reaching the international level could protect players and coaches while also shielding Cameroon\u2019s biggest clubs from sanctions that can have serious sporting and financial consequences.<\/p>\n
For Canon Sportif, the priority is now to resolve the dispute with Koudeka and regain access to the transfer market. But the case should also serve as a warning to every club in Cameroon: contracts are not simply administrative documents. When they are signed, they create obligations, and failure to respect those obligations can ultimately come with a FIFA price tag.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
