Jean Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9, affectionately known as \u201cJean Money\u201d and \u201cT\u00eate d\u2019Or\u201d, is one of the greatest figures in the history of Cameroonian football. Born on June 12, 1946 in Ngoulemekong and originally from Akok in the South Region, Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9 grew up in Mvog-Ada, Yaound\u00e9. His legendary playing career was built entirely with Canon Yaound\u00e9, where he spent 16 seasons from 1966 to 1982 without changing clubs. His debut was spectacular: at just 20, he scored five goals as Canon defeated reigning champions Ca\u00efman de Douala 7-1.<\/p>\n
With the Kpa-Kum, Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9 became a symbol of Cameroonian football\u2019s golden generation. He won six Cameroon Championships, six Cameroon Cups, three African Champions Clubs Cups (1971, 1978 and 1980) and the 1979 African Cup Winners\u2019 Cup. He was the Cameroon league\u2019s top scorer in 1976 with 22 goals before reaching the pinnacle of individual recognition by winning the African Ballon d\u2019Or in 1980. His nickname \u201cT\u00eate d\u2019Or\u201d reflected his extraordinary ability in the air, where his timing and heading made him one of Africa\u2019s most feared forwards.<\/p>\n
Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9 was equally influential with the Indomitable Lions, earning more than 100 appearances, including around 80 officially recognised FIFA internationals. He represented Cameroon at the 1970 and 1972 Africa Cup of Nations and captained the national team between 1976 and 1979. He was expected to lead Cameroon at the country\u2019s historic first World Cup in Spain in 1982, but a knee injury suffered during a training camp in Germany ruled him out. His absence paved the way for Roger Milla, a development that remained one of the greatest regrets of his career.<\/p>\n
Rather than allowing the injury to end his contribution, Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9 turned to coaching and technical development. Between 1984 and 1988, he trained at INSEP in Paris, obtaining qualifications in sports management and coaching, while also completing stages with Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain and Cr\u00e9teil. Back in Cameroon, he coached Canon Yaound\u00e9 and the national team on several occasions, and later served as an assistant during Cameroon\u2019s triumphant 2000 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ghana and Nigeria.<\/p>\n
His influence eventually extended into the administration and development of the game. Manga Ongu\u00e9n\u00e9 served as Technical Director of Cameroonian football for more than a decade, helping shape the country\u2019s technical structures before leaving the position in 2018. He was also a FIFA instructor from 2001 and served as director of FIFA\u2019s development office in Yaound\u00e9, making him one of the few Cameroonians to successfully combine an elite playing career with coaching, education, technical leadership and football development.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
