The Democratic Republic of Congo begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign today against Portugal in what promises to be one of the most anticipated Group K fixtures of the opening round. It marks DR Congo\u2019s return to the tournament for the first time since 1974, and they arrive as underdogs but full of belief after a demanding and emotional qualification journey.<\/p>\n

Portugal, meanwhile, enter the contest as clear favourites and one of the tournament\u2019s most balanced squads. Led by Cristiano Ronaldo and packed with technical quality across midfield and attack, Roberto Mart\u00ednez\u2019s side are expected to control possession and dictate the tempo throughout the match. However, the Portuguese coach has stressed that early group games can be deceptive and warned against complacency.<\/p>\n

DR Congo are expected to approach the match with a compact defensive structure and look to exploit transitions through pace and direct attacking options such as Yoane Wissa and C\u00e9dric Bakambu. Their physicality and defensive organisation will be key if they are to withstand Portugal\u2019s pressure and stay competitive deep into the game.<\/p>\n

DR Congo defender Axel Tuanzebe also reflected the squad\u2019s mindset, noting that there is \u201cno pressure\u201d on the team and that they have already overcome difficult challenges to reach the tournament. His comments underline the freedom with which the African side intend to approach the match.<\/p>\n

One of the key battles is expected in midfield, where Portugal\u2019s creativity and control will be tested against DR Congo\u2019s disciplined defensive block led by Chancel Mbemba. The ability of DR Congo to absorb pressure and break quickly could determine whether they are able to trouble one of Europe\u2019s elite sides.<\/p>\n

For Portugal, this match represents an opportunity to start strongly and assert early control in Group K.
