As the MTN Elite One season heads towards a thrilling conclusion, three clubs remain locked in a battle that could go down as one of the most memorable title races in recent Cameroonian football history. Unisport du Haut-Nkam lead the standings with 46 points, while defending champions Colombe du Sud and Dynamo de Douala are level on 43 points, with four matches remaining.<\/p>\n

The significance of this race extends beyond the current standings. Unisport are chasing their first league title since 1996, hoping to end a 30-year wait for domestic glory. Dynamo de Douala, despite being one of the country\u2019s most iconic clubs and winners of the Cameroon Cup in 1979, 1981 and 1998, have never won the national league championship since their creation in 1948. Just four years after returning to the top flight, the Bon Ba Djob have an opportunity to write the greatest chapter in their history. Meanwhile, reigning champions Colombe are seeking to retain their crown and claim only the second league title in the club\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Yet while attention is focused on the leading trio, another club could have the biggest influence on the destination of the trophy: PWD Bamenda.<\/p>\n

The Abakwa Boys know what it takes to be champions. PWD lifted their first and only league title in 2020 and remain one of the most respected and difficult sides to face in Cameroonian football. Their role in this title race is particularly important because they still have fixtures against both Colombe and Dynamo, giving them a direct opportunity to shape the final standings.<\/p>\n

Unisport have already experienced the danger of facing PWD. Their crushing 5-0 defeat in Bamenda earlier this season remains one of the most shocking results of the campaign and served as a reminder that the Abakwa Boys are capable of dismantling even the strongest teams in the league.<\/p>\n

For Dynamo, however, the trip to Bamenda carries an additional layer of history and emotion.<\/p>\n

Relations between the two clubs have long been coloured by memories of the 1979 Cameroon Cup final, won by Dynamo. More than four decades later, some older PWD supporters still speak about that match with bitterness. Among sections of the Abakwa faithful, there remains a lingering belief that PWD goalkeeper Epesse, who hailed from the Bassa community associated with Dynamo\u2019s traditional support base, was not fully committed to the cause during that final. No evidence has ever substantiated such claims, and they remain part of football folklore rather than established fact. Nevertheless, the story continues to circulate among supporters and has contributed to a historic rivalry that still resonates whenever the two clubs meet.<\/p>\n

Whether those memories have any impact on the current generation is debatable, but they add extra intrigue to a fixture that could have enormous implications for the championship race.<\/p>\n

Looking at the run-in, Colombe appear to have the most favorable schedule on paper, while Dynamo face arguably the toughest route. Unisport remain favourites thanks to their three-point advantage, but away trips to Gazelle and Coton Sport, followed by a potentially decisive final-day clash against Dynamo, leave little room for error.<\/p>\n

What is becoming increasingly clear is that the title may not simply be decided by the performances of Unisport, Colombe and Dynamo. It could be influenced by a former champion with no title ambitions of their own but with the power to derail those of others.<\/p>\n

PWD Bamenda have already shaken the race once. With crucial matches against Colombe and Dynamo still ahead, the Abakwa Boys could yet determine who lifts the MTN Elite One trophy. In a season defined by fine margins, Bamenda may prove to be the place where dreams are either realised or shattered.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
