On a football pitch filled with roaring fans, determined players and rising tension, a single whistle can silence the chaos. In Cameroon, few understand that power better than Ntangti Innocentia Njang, a teacher by profession who has risen to become one of the country\u2019s most respected female referees.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 34, the wife, mother and educator has carved out a reputation for discipline, confidence and calm authority on the field. Crowned Cameroon\u2019s Best Female Referee at the 2025 Ballon d\u2019Or Awards, Ntangti represents a growing wave of women redefining leadership roles in African football.<\/p>\n

Yet her journey into refereeing began not with childhood dreams of football glory \u2014 but with pure curiosity.<\/p>\n

Fascinated by the whistle<\/em><\/p>\n

Ironically, Ntangti was not even a football fan when her interest in refereeing first sparked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat fascinated me was the referee,\u201d she recalls with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, like how can a single whistle change the direction of play? The same person controlling 22 players and even sending some off. How can one person possess so much authority?\u201dThe idea stayed with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMind you, I was never a football fan, but for the referee\u2019s sake I could watch a game.\u201d That fascination soon turned into ambition.<\/p>\n

What began as curiosity about the person in the middle of the pitch eventually became a professional calling \u2014 one that would take her from local football fields in Cameroon to international competitions.<\/p>\n

From teacher to referee<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Away from the pitch, Ntangti\u2019s primary profession is teaching. She built her academic path at the University of Buea, earning a degree in Accounting before furthering her training in sports education.<\/p>\n

She later obtained a diploma from CENAJES in Bamenda, a prestigious institution known for training sports professionals in Cameroon.<\/p>\n

But in 2016, while pursuing her professional career in education, she decided to take a leap into football officiating. She began as a regional referee, officiating local matches while balancing the responsibilities of teaching and family life. Her progress was rapid.<\/p>\n

Through discipline, strong decision-making and deep knowledge of the Laws of the Game, she earned promotion to officiate in Cameroon\u2019s Elite One Women\u2019s League, the country\u2019s top female football competition.<\/p>\n

Rising onto the international stage<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Her consistent performances soon attracted attention beyond Cameroon.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Ntangti reached a significant milestone \u2014 she became an international referee under FIFA, joining a select group of Cameroonian officials recognised by the world governing body.<\/p>\n

The promotion opened doors to larger competitions and continental exposure.<\/p>\n

She has since officiated in regional tournaments, youth international qualifiers and CAF competitions, including matches linked to U-20 and U-17 continental qualifiers and women\u2019s club competitions across Africa.<\/p>\n

For Ntangti, each appointment represents another opportunity to prove that competence \u2014 not gender \u2014 defines authority in football.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you step onto the pitch, the players must trust your decisions,\u201d she says. \u201cYour confidence and preparation are what give you that authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recognition at home<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In Cameroon, Ntangti\u2019s work has not gone unnoticed.<\/p>\n

At the 2025 Cameroon Ballon d\u2019Or Awards in Yaound\u00e9, she was crowned Best Female Referee, recognition for her outstanding performances during the 2024\/2025 football season.<\/p>\n

Innocentia and her fellow laureates are celebrated on Women’s day<\/p><\/div>\n

The award was both personal validation and a sign of progress for women in Cameroonian football officiating.<\/p>\n

Her growing list of distinctions also includes nominations in previous Ballon d\u2019Or editions and recognition by refereeing bodies for her consistency and professionalism.<\/p>\n

Balancing family and football<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

For Ntangti, refereeing is not just about decisions on the pitch. It is about balance.<\/p>\n

She is a mother, a wife, a teacher and a referee \u2014 roles that often demand equal dedication.<\/p>\n

Preparing for matches requires intense physical training, regular seminars and constant study of evolving football regulations. But she embraces the challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not always easy balancing refereeing, work and family,\u201d she admits. \u201cBut when you love what you do, you find the strength to make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n

A role model for young women<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Ntangti Innocentia Njang hopes her journey will inspire other women and girls to see football differently.<\/p>\n

The sport offers many opportunities beyond playing \u2014 coaching, administration and officiating among them. And she wants more women to take that path.<\/p>\n

Her ultimate dream is to officiate at the FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup, one of the highest stages a referee can reach.<\/p>\n

But even beyond that ambition, she believes the true victory lies in opening doors for others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf young girls see someone like them holding the whistle and controlling a game, they will believe they can do it too.\u201d<\/p>\n

On every pitch she steps onto, Ntangti carries that message.<\/p>\n

A single whistle, after all, can change the direction of play \u2014 and sometimes, the direction of a life.<\/p>\n
